2nd Winter Game Jam, December 14-16, 2018, Klagenfurt, Austria

The 2nd Winter Game Jam is open to everyone who likes games and wants to create, test and talk about games. Starting on Friday the topic will be revealed to all participants at the same time and random groups will brainstorm games. Then, after the ideas are pitched, team will emerge around ideas and games are to be created. Finally, on Sunday, the projects are presented to a jury and a price for the most awesome project is awarded.

Gamebert is the figure of game related activities at Alpen-Adria Universität Klagenfurt and the mascot of the Game Jams there.

FWF Research Project SQUASH Approved

A new ITEC research project on Surgical Quality Assessment in Gynecologic Laparoscopy (SQUASH) – in collaboration with the Medical University of Vienna – has been approved by the FWF Austrian Science Fund. In this research project the team around Klaus Schöffmann will investigate how to improve the efficiency and feasibility of technical skill assessment by automatic video content analysis, i.e, by content-based video retrieval and current methods of machine learning/deep learning.

On Reducing Effort in Evaluating Laparoscopic Skills

Abstract: Training and evaluation of laparoscopic skills have become an important aspect of young surgeons’ education. The evaluation process is currently performed manually by experienced surgeons through reviewing video recordings of laparoscopic procedures for detecting technical errors using conventional video players and specific pen and paper rating schemes. The problem is, that the manual review process is time-consuming and exhausting, but nevertheless necessary to support young surgeons in their educational training. Motivated by the need to reduce the effort in evaluating laparoscopic skills, this PhD project aims at investigating state-of-the-art content analysis approaches for finding error-prone video sections in surgery videos. In this proposal, the focus specifically lies on performance assessment in gynecologic laparoscopy using the Generic Error Rating Tool (GERT).

Mathias Lux actively participated in the MediaEval 2018 Workshop in Sophia Antipolis, France. He co-organized GameStory: The 2018 Video Game Analytics Challenge and Medico: The 2018 Multimedia for Medicine Task and held two presentations.

 

 

 

Early and Late Fusion of Classifiers for the MediaEval 2018 Medico Task

AAU/ITEC researchers Mario Taschwer, Klaus Schöffmann, and Jürgen Primus collaborated with Oge Marques (FAU, USA) on a research challenge targeting automatic classification of endoscopic images of the human gastro-intestinal tract. The challenge was posed as the MediaEval 2018 Medico task and called not only for classification effectiveness, but also for run-time efficiency of proposed approaches. The joint AAU-FAU team therefore proposed a combination of CNN-based feature extraction with traditional machine learning algorithms and achieved respectable results in comparison to deep-learning based approaches submitted by other participants, which has been honored with a “distinctive mention” by Medico task organizers. The AAU-FAU approach has been presented remotely by Mario Taschwer at the MediaEval 2018 Workshop, Sophia Antipolis, France, on October 30, 2018.
